CBSE Class 10 Mathematics chapter 5 - ARITHMETIC PROGRESSIONS - nth term of an AP
Let
a1, a2, a3, ……… makes an AP whose first term a1
is a and common difference is d
Then,
we can write as
The 2nd term a2 = a + d = a + (2 – 1) d
The 3rd term a3 = a2 + d = (a + d) + d = a + 2d = a + (3 – 1) d
The 4th term a4 = a3 + d = (a + 2d) + d = a + 3d = a + (4 – 1) d
So on ……
In
this AP, nth term can be written as:
a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, . . .
or
an = a + (n—1)d
where
an = the nth term
a = the first term
n = the position of the term
d = the common difference.
an is called general term of AP. It Total m term in AP then am shows the last term of AP which is denoted by l.
