Let a₁, a₂, a₃, ……… makes an AP whose first term a₁ is a and common difference is d

Then, we can write as

The 2^nd term a₂ = a + d = a + (2 – 1) d

The 3^rd term a₃ = a₂ + d = (a + d) + d = a + 2d = a + (3 – 1) d

The 4^th term a₄ = a₃ + d = (a + 2d) + d = a + 3d = a + (4 – 1) d

So on ……

In this AP, n^th term can be written as:

a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, . . .

or

a_n = a + (n—1)d

where

a_n = the n^th term

a = the first term

n = the position of the term

d = the common difference.

a_n is called general term of AP. It Total m term in AP then a_m shows the last term of AP which is denoted by l.
